Posts from Puerto Rico

Until this summer, some of us might not have thought of Puerto Rico too often. Be honest — did “Despacito” get stuck in your head more than once as coverage of Hurricane Maria took over the news?

It’s been well over a month since the hurricane made landfall on the island (September 20). It might seem like an eternity to those who lost their homes, business, schools and health facilities. As only 30% in Puerto Rico has been restored, this is now the longest blackout in U.S. history. But in terms of recovery, we are still in very early stages.

I’m fortunate that some people somewhere have determined that I may be able to assist in those recovery efforts. One of my professional roles is to provide digital communications like web content and social media in times of national disasters, and now I’ll be doing so in Puerto Rico for the next month or so.

Tonight, I make my way from northeastern Calfornia, where I’ve been working as a seasonal park ranger, to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I’m honored to join my colleagues and do our best in this effort.

The days will be really long! But when they are over (and on my own time and equipment!) I’ll post here about what it’s like in Puerto Rico post-Maria. I hope to share stories of positivity and renewal, but I want to keep it real.
